This movie’s not ending, it’s just changing channels

This train stops here.

However, the journey isn’t. It’s just changing tracks.

The movie is changing channels. The rider is switching horses. The car is getting a new engine. And the party is shifting from the dining room to the lounge. Ain’t no more juice in this lime, so it’s time for a new lime.

In other words:

Got it? Dig? ‘Nuff said? Capeesh?

It may be another year before we remember, but . . . . . Thanks.

It seems fitting today to shout out to all the good men out there who are determined, dedicated fathers.

You get taken for granted day after day.

You have loved and forgiven, again and again. And again.

You’ve been tested to your limits by mood-swinging (or maybe just swinging) partners. And sometimes beyond.

When they abandoned you, you kept the channels open.

No deadbeat dad, you. You paid out, and still are.

The sacrifices you make for them go unknown or unthanked.

The mainstream media ignores you for the most part. When they don’t, they outrightly mock you.

Though you knew no father yourself, you determine to be a father for the little ones the Almighty entrusted you with.

No one ever told you to believe in yourself, but you tell them to believe in themselves.

All while struggling to master The Demons Within.

You are the salt of the earth, though we never tell you. On you, we depend.

It may be a year before we remember to tell you again: Hey, thanks!

With all due apologies to Mr Kipling, “You’re a man, my friend.”

Much obliged, Dad. Keep it up. Don’t quit. I count myself with you. I salute you.

Fear! The city is rife with it!

Fear is really just a chronic disease that we’re all afflicted with.

Potentially, but not necessarily, fatal. No cure, but plenty of treatment for the symptoms. You can develop terrific coping strategies, if you listen to the right specialists and advisors.

If.

(Hint: That might mean ditching your current specialists in favour of new ones.)

You can even turn fear to your advantage, if you accept the risks. The horse will occasionally throw you, but if you get back on, it can carry you a long way.

I have friends with ailments that mean they live with continual pain. Pain so bad that pain killers don’t touch it. It’s just a matter of degree. They have good days, they have bad days.

But to look at them, you’d never know.

They’ve developed coping mechanisms that enable they to function normally. They have what looks like normal home lives, they have jobs, hobbies, kids to take care of, etc, etc.

Fear is like that.

You will never get rid of it.

The important question is, Will you let it incapacitate you? Or will you develop those coping mechanisms, and turn it to your advantage?

Choose.

Unequal Distribution of Wealth? Or, No Wealth? Choose.

I fear that we are turning into a society of people who view anyone making more money than me as cheaters and tax evaders, who must be forced to pay their “fair share”.

(Define fair! The prevailing opinion seems to be, “Any amount of money that doesn’t make me feel jealous.”)

I’ve no idea if the Take That boys are guilty of tax evasion, or just legal tax avoidance. What I do know is that they’ve been tried and found guilty in the media already.

The notion of “equal distribution of wealth” is pure fiction. There will always be those who are eager to gain more than they have, just as there will always be those who cannot or will not help themselves.

The only two realistic poles on the spectrum are: “Unequal distribution of wealth”, and, “No wealth”.

While we should always strive to reduce inequality, I question any related initiative or any media frenzy for which jealousy is the obvious driving motive.

If this trend continues unchecked, I predict growing poverty for an increasing number, while those with the means to create wealth simply stay on the golf course all day.

My prediction for you in 2014

Change.

Lots and lots of change.

More of it, and getting faster.

You can try to hide from it. Run from it. Resist it. Fight it. Scream at it.

Or you can face it. Maybe even help drive it. (Thereby gaining a measure of control.)

Which will you choose?

And which will you choose (by default) if you choose not to choose?
